The life of DAVID BECKHAM

David Beckham is one of Britain's most iconic athletes whose name is also an elite global advertising brand. He was captain of the English national team from 2000 to 2006, scored in three different FIFA World Cups, and played midfield for clubs in Manchester, England and Madrid, Spain, before agreeing to move to Los Angeles, to play for Los Angeles Galaxy team on a five year contract beginning on July 1, 2007.

He was born David Robert Joseph Beckham on May 2, 1975, in Leytonstone, East London, England, son of Ted Beckham, a kitchen fitter, and Sandra West, a hairdresser. Beckham's maternal grandfather is Jewish, and he has been mentioning the religion as influence; he wears a tattoo written in Hebrew from the 'Song of Songs' in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), albeit he is not known to practice Judaism or any other faith. Beckham has always played in long sleeve shirts to cover up his tattoos in consideration of others who may feel uncomfortable due to their beliefs.

He had a good season in 1999 - 2000 and helped Manchester United to win the Premier League. At that time, he married singer Victoria Beckham (nee' Adams) from the popular musical group The Spice Girls, and the couple had their first son, Brooklyn, born in 1999. That same year, Beckham was given a permission to miss training routine, in order to look after his son Brooklyn, who suffered from a stomach infection. Meanwhile, the Manchester United's manager, Alex Ferguson, fined Beckham £50,000 (about $80,000 then) the maximum amount that was permitted, for babysitting with his sick child, while his wife was spotted at a London fashion Week event on the same night. Ferguson's claim that Beckham should be able to train if his wife stayed home that day, caused a serious personal tension between two men. In February 2003, following the defeat to Arsenal, the Manchester United's manager Alex Ferguson entered the changing room and kicked a football boot that struck Beckham over the eye, causing a cut that required stitches.

The article talks about how technology which is the computer and Internet helps making the teaching and learning process easier with just one click. The article mentioned about how the technology helps to improve lesson plan, how to improve the vocabulary, how grammar can be fun, how technology can be adapted to real life situation and also assessment based on the usage of technology.Materials to teach are easy to obtain through the Internet and it will make the lesson much more fun and it can cater to all types of students’ level. Not only that, the article also mentioned that, the Internet can help to expand the students’ vocabulary. Teachers nowadays can not just rely on text book hundred percent as the language used is not suitable for everybody who has different types of proficiency level. Therefore, variety is important and technology can help with that. Grammar is not easy to teach but teacher needs to know how to tackle students during the teaching and learning process. The article suggested using Internet will make learning grammar fun where students can explore the usage and function of grammar that they are learning on their own. With the help of computer and the Net, students’ creativity can be widened where they can use it for searching their own materials and can be presented and shared with their friends and teacher. When students already know and familiarized themselves with the technology it makes the learning process easier for them as they know where to find the materials that they need and how to use it. It saves time when they can learn together about it. Students can also use the knowledge that they have of the technology for their own personal purposes where they can create their own learning process and materials. When students are becoming more creative of their assignment, the assessment is becoming easier for teachers. Students can check their own progress with the quizzes that they do in the Net and they can improve themselves with the help of the Net. With the technology, students not only can learn with the materials that they found in the Net but they can also create the materials on their own to help them understand better of the language that they are learning.

I agree with this research where technology does help in improving the language that we are learning and also, it does make the teaching and learning process easier. Students are bored with just text books and white board but they will never get bored using the technology (i.e computer and the Net). It actually helps the students to learn better because there are variety activities for students with different level of proficiency. It is also makes teaching easier for the teacher as they can just be a facilitator in the class while the students find their own materials for their learning. But unfortunately for Malaysia, our technology is not as good as other countries like America. We still have problems with teachers who do not know how to use the computer at all, and not to forget the Net. Not only that, senior teachers usually thinks that using text book is easier as they think that using the technology is too much of a hassle. Not only that, school usually have troubles in providing the equipment where the computers are not enough for the student or usually half of the computers in class cannot be used due technical problem and the Net is usually slow or the system down. That is the bad side of using technology in Malaysia. Not only that, students here usually will use the computer for their own personal use in class where they are prohibited to do so. Teachers have to be in control of the situation but usually students enjoy going to the computer laboratory because it is something that they can discover the information themselves. But I still think that this approach is much better than the traditional method. The government and schools need to find a way to provide the equipment equally to everybody and to improve the connection of the Net as the students are required to pay fee for the computer and the Net usage in school.

post entry no 3

1. Why do you think evaluation of CALL courseware, websites, materials etc important?

I think it can help other people to know what type of courseware, websites, or materials that are good or not for them to use it as references or guidelines for their lessons. Or maybe, with evaluation, mayb those who created the courseware and all can refer to it to improve the content of the courseware or websites so that it will be much better. i think lah.. that is my opinion..

2.
How do you think Hot Potatoes JCloze may help your students learn English?

I think it will really help my students in learning because they do not have to copy it down on their exercise book or do it on worksheets. They will like it because it is something new and different and they like using the computer. so i think it will really help the students to enjoy the lesson better. I think we should learn this course before we went for our practicum. It is really useful and i think it'll make our lives easier and the students' lives happier :)

that is all for now..
tq
:)

In-class TASK 1

  1. Please introduce yourself.
My name is Nadia Tasha Mohd Puard. I was born on September 21,1987 at Johor Bahru but i live in KL (which i prefer rather than living in JB). But since I'm studying in Shah Alam now, I spent most of my time here, not KL. And somehow,I like it that way because most of my friends are here.

I'm a quiet person. You might not notice me when i'm in class and i kinda like it that way. I know that lecturers prefer their students to be active in class but i'm scared to be so because i'm not confident with myself and i'm afraid i will end up embarrasing myself in front of the whole class. That will not be a pretty scene.

2. How would you rate yourself in terms of your computer skill and why?(e.g. expert, novice, savvy, geek, illterate etc.)

Hurm..let just say that i'm not an expert. For example, blogging. I've never blogged before until when i was in part 5 because my lecturer,Mr Jaferi who taught me creative writing wanted us to create a blog for our assignment, just like you. Other than that, i don't blog. Even to create this blog also, it took 10-15 minutes. From there i think you can rate on my computer skill.

I only know the basic stuff like surfing the web, facebook, download songs or movies. Other than that..?erm..i think i need guidance. I'm so slow on using technology. It's a little bit sad huh?

3. What computer software and hardware knowledge do you have?

I'm using windows XP and i know how to use microsoft office (microsoft words, powerpoint, publisher and excel) and between microsoft office 2003 and 2007, i think i prefer 2007 even though some may say it's confusing compared to 2003. Well, that is just my opinion.

As for hardware..erm..that is hard..maybe i can identify a little bit..but i don't know if i will get it all correct..

4. Have you experienced learning via the computer? (online, etc)

Hurm..i'm not really sure what do you mean by it..if you mean trying to get info for our assignment..of course i always do that..

If you mean learn how to use the computer via online..my answer is maybe. I don't really remember.sorry.

5. Did you try to incorporate technology in your some of your lessons during your practicum? Was it a success or a failure? If you did not what was/were the reason(s)?

Yeah, i did use it. Sometimes it was a success and sometimes it was not. It depends on the computer lab actually. Sometimes the sound system was bad. Sometimes the projector cannot be used. It's always the technical problem. But the students did enjoy it.

6. What is your opinion on the use of the computer/technology in language teaching?

I think it's a great idea. Students are easily get bored if they have to learn using books all the time. Even though the text books are colorful, they hate it when they have to read lines by lines and they have to memorize it.

But using computer/technology, it'll be fun. Students like it when they can practice what they have learnt in class before. It gives them the excitement to learn more. And it is easier to make them understand when they have the materials in front of them where they can see it, touch it, feel it and use it. So i think it's a great and brilliant idea.

7. What are your expectations in this course?

My expectations? Of course to get an 'A' in this course. I also hope that it will be interesting and i can learn more on using technology so that it will be easier for me in the future. I also hope that i can manage to stay focus in class because that will be a hard thing for me to do especially if there is a computer in front of me hehe..

And one more thing..I'm a slow learner..so i hope this course is not a complicated course because it will only make me un'focus'ed in class...hehe..that is all
